Frédéric-Charles Petit founded Toluna in 2000 in Paris France. Frederic’s ultimate objective is to transform the Market Research industry into a mass market and social experience. At the core of Frédéric’s vision is toluna.com, the social voting community. Toluna.com’s role is to engage consumers to participate and generate millions of votes and polls around every day topics thus making consumer generated research a reality.
Within 10 years, Frédéric expanded Toluna from a single panel community, operating in a single market, to a global company with panels in 39 countries and offices in 14 countries. Toluna.com is now the voting platform of Toluna with millions of members actively voting on hundreds of thousands of topics everyday. Under Frédéric’s leadership, with a constantly challenging innovative spirit, Toluna has built a suite of cutting-edge products to meet the industry’s diverse needs for consumer feedback. This product suite includes Toluna QuickSurveys, a DIY survey tool and instant consumer insights, PanelPortal, a branded ‘community’ platform, survey scripting and panel management technology, Toluna Analytics, a DIY sophisticated analytics solutions, ThinkAction, one of the top Afilliate Network and recently Gifties, a revolutionary way to send virtual gifts that can become real thus bringing together social gifting and social voting.
Toluna was listed on the AIM stock exchange in 2005, and the company was acquired by ITWP in 2011 with a market capitalization of 170 M GBP sterling. Toluna was ranked in the top 30 of the annual Sunday Times Microsoft TechTrack 100, which awards the fastest-growing British companies, as well as, in 5th place of the Investec’s ‘Top 100 fastest-growing private companies in the UK and was featured as one of the most successful and pioneering digital companies in France according to the magazine L’Entreprise.
Frédéric holds a Masters degree in comparative jurisprudence from New York University and a diploma in advanced studies in international economic law from the Sorbonne in Paris (D. E. A.). He practiced as a French lawyer in the corporate department of Allen & Overy’s Paris office, before establishing Toluna in May 2000. Frédéric is a frequent speaker at industry events including ESOMAR and CASRO.
Group Chief Operations Officer
Jim joined Toluna as Group Chief Operations Officer in December 2011. The appointment emphasizes Toluna’s ongoing commitment to providing high-quality survey data and a superior client experience. His industry background, commitment to quality, and deep understanding of client needs will benefit clients across the world. Jim most recently held the position of President, North America at IPSOS Interactive Services where he had responsibility for all of the online market research conducted in North America. Prior to working at IPSOS, Jim spent more than 20 years at Harris Interactive, and held the title of Executive Vice President, Global Research Operations. During his tenure at Harris, Jim was responsible for a number of initiatives, including the globalization of Operations and the development of the online market research capabilities. He holds a Bachelors of Science Degree in Math and Computer Science from the State University of New York College at Brockport. Jim has been active in numerous industry organizations including those that are involved in promoting the overall quality of online data collection.
Chief Financial Officer
Pierre joined Toluna in May of 2013 and serves as the company’s Chief Financial Officer. Pierre comes to us with 25 years of finance experience and was previously the CFO and general secretary of Risc Group, a major European IT operator in outsourced services. Pierre has participated in the IPO of Risc Group on Euronext Paris in 2000 and has been in charge of the company’s finance organization during its development over the last 12 years: He supported all the finance operations, from private and public capital increases to several companies’ acquisitions in the build-up process of the group.
Pierre started his career in Ernst & Young Paris. After 6 years of finance audit, he has spent 6 years in the agro food business (Perrier) before joining an internet start up in the late 1900s, future mother company of Risc Group.
Pierre is a graduate of the Ecole Supérieure de Commerce de Pau and is chartered accountant.
George H. Terhanian, Ph.D.
Group Chief Strategy & Products Officer
George Terhanian is Toluna’s Group Chief Strategy & Products Officer. He is a member of the board of directors of the Advertising Research Foundation and the Council of American Survey Research Organizations (CASRO), as well. Through the years, he has served on committees or advisory groups for organizations such as the European Society for Opinion and Marketing Research, the US Department of Education (USDE), the British Polling Council, and the American Social Health Association.
Prior to joining Toluna in 2011, Dr. Terhanian served in a variety of roles for nearly fourteen years at Harris Interactive, including President, Global Solutions; President, Harris Interactive Europe; and President, Global Internet Research. He also oversaw the Harris Poll.
Earlier in his career, Terhanian taught in elementary and secondary schools and worked briefly in the Inspector General’s Office of the USDE. He also served an appointment as an American Educational Research Association (AERA) Fellow at the National Center for Educational Statistics, and received a dissertation fellowship from the AERA.
Dr. Terhanian received a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, an Ed.M. from Harvard University, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Haverford College. His methodological expertise lies in the design and analysis of multi-mode studies.
Chief Research Officer
John Bremer joined as Toluna’s Chief Research Officer in April 2011. Before joining Toluna, Bremer served as Chief Research Officer at Compete, Inc., a Kantar Media company. Prior to working at Compete, John worked for Harris Interactive. His work has consisted of research into all areas of representativeness. He has specialized, however, in areas of non-probability sampling, rare populations, selection bias, and online survey research. He is most well known for having developed the proprietary propensity score weighting technique utilized by Harris, as well as producing successful election forecasts in the US in 2000-2008 and in the UK in 2005-2010. In addition, he co-directed the Harris Center for Innovation.Previously, John was a senior research assistant to Dr. James Heckman, specializing in selection bias issues. Projects John worked on were cited in awarding Professor Heckman the 2000 Nobel Prize in Economics. John was also a research associate at the advertising agency DDB Needham in their Analytical Resources Group. John received his BAs in statistics, mathematical economic analysis, and public policy from Rice University in Houston, T X, where he was also an NCAA Division I Academic All-American swimmer. He was awarded an MS in statistics from the University of Chicago. Later John returned to the University of Chicago to obtain his MBA. He was awarded an MA and is ABD in political science from the University of Rochester receiving high passes on his qualifying exams in American Politics, Econometrics and Positive Theory. He is a professional member of the American Statistical Association.
Currently, John is co-chairing the CASRO Online Research Conference, to be held in March of 2012. John is featured monthly in the Market Research Bulletin’s SURVEY Magazine. John also sits on the Research-on-Research Committee for the Advertising Research Foundation‘s Research Quality Council as well as the American Statistical Association’s Survey Review Committee.
John is a Featured Author for the International Journal of Market Research.
Senior Vice President of Research & Development
Frank is Senior VP R&D at Toluna where he is leading the R&D effort spearheaded by the social voting site toluna.com. Frank’s experience lies in text analysis and communities. Before joining Toluna, he co-founded RawSugar a social bookmarking start-up that pioneered faceted search based on user tags. Prior to that, Frank worked at Bellcore, Lehman Brothers and several start-ups where he was responsible for solving a multitude of business problems using a selection of unique and fun technologies. He earned his PhD and MSc in Computer Science from Columbia University, NY.
Senior Vice President of Engineering for Enterprise Products
Nitin Patel is a Senior Vice President of Engineering for Enterprise Products at Toluna centered around Toluna’s leading Unified Panel System and industry recognized AutomateSurvey and PanelPortal platforms. Nitin is an expert at building enterprise class systems using small, highly efficient teams in multiple locations including off-shore development. Nitin joined the Toluna team as part of the acquisition of Greenfield Online and made significant contributions to the global panel and survey fulfillment integration of the companies in record industry time. Prior to Toluna, Nitin has held key management positions building enterprise systems at JDA Software (Retail Marketing Software), Engage (Internet Advertising Platform, PictureTel (Desktop Video Conferencing Systems). Nitin earned his Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering from Northeastern University and attend Boston University for his Masters in Software Engineering.
Vice President, Group Product Marketing
Carol Haney joined Toluna as Head of Group Product Marketing in January 2012. Before joining Toluna, Carol was the thought leader in the development of Research LifeStreaming at Harris Interactive, an industry-changing method of doing data collection by panel-based social media listening. Using Research LifeStreaming techniques as well as other research methodologies, Carol led the formative research for the largest anti-smoking consumer education campaign sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The formative research included message platform development through copy testing, and the campaign, released in April 2012, was declared “transcendent” as well as “among the year’s most memorable advertising and perhaps among the best-ever work in its category” by AdWeek. Previous to Toluna, Carol has served in leadership roles at TNS, SPSS, and the National Opinion Research Center. At NORC, Carol was part of the team that won the AAPOR Innovators Award for web-enabled data analytics for the General Social Survey. Carol graduated valedictorian with a BA in Classics from Shimer College and attended the University of Chicago for graduate work in Computer Science.
In conjunction with the Research Triangle Institute, Carol is currently working on a book under contract with Wiley called Social Media, Sociality & Survey Research, due out mid-2013. Carol is also author of a series of articles with The Futurist Society on the future of text analytics as a research tool, to be published this upcoming fall.

Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing
Val joined Toluna in June 2005, bringing with him a wealth of experience gained in executive positions in high growth organisations. His global online research, media, technology and services expertise helps Toluna to focus on building long-term client relationships and successfully meet clients’ requirements. Val holds an Honours degree in Electronics from UMIST in the UK.
Managing Director, North America
Mark took on the role of Managing Director for Toluna North America in 2013 and brings 8 years experience and success from his former role as Toluna’s UK Managing Director. As well as running the UK business, Mark also headed up Toluna’s Global Technology Practice. The group’s responsibilities include enterprise community solutions (PanelPortal, Toluna Analytics) through to mass market DIY research tools such as QuickSurveys. Before joining Toluna as a founding member of the UK business in 2005, Mark worked for Greenfield Online, a pioneer in internet research (and subsequently acquired by Toluna in 2009). Prior to joining the internet research revolution he had 8 years experience in data planning and direct marketing. Mark has a degree in Business Economics and French from Southampton University, England.
Head of Sales, North America
Michael Anderson is Head of Sales for Toluna North America. In his role, he is responsible for overseeing the company’s North American sales effort. Michael joined Toluna (formerly Greenfield Online) in 2003 as Senior Director, Major Accounts and was tasked with heading up some of Toluna’s key client relationships. In this role, Michael was influential in creating sales and service teams that worked together, in partnership, to improve the level of service and, in turn, increase revenues and client loyalty. The model he developed is in use today. Michael has an MBA, Finance and a B.S., Mathematics both from Fairfield University.
Managing Director, UK
Paul is responsible for the strategic growth of Toluna’s business in the UK. He moved from his role as sales director for UK & Ireland in April 2013, following a sustained increase in the number and depth of client relationships Toluna forged with blue-chip research and technology customers in all sectors.
Before joining Toluna in 2010, Paul led divisions for world-class media companies, in Hong Kong for United Business Media, and in London for Haymarket. His immersion in digital technology solutions includes driving strategy at fast-growth businesses including a digital-CRM agency and streamed-media start up.
Managing Director, APAC
James Rogers is the Managing Director for Asia Pacific, and is responsible for our growth and development in both Sample and Technology business in the region. Prior to joining Toluna as co-founder of the UK business in 2005, James gained his experience in championing the use of the Internet, as a viable alternative to traditional methodologies, at Greenfield Online.
In 2010, James took on the role as lead of Toluna’s operations in Asia and relocated to Sydney where he successfully established Toluna as a premier supplier of quality online research and services in the region. Most recently James has moved to Hong Kong, in order to focus on the newest frontier embracing online and new technology based research in Asia. James holds a degree in Business Management & Information Systems from Worcester University.
Senior Vice President, Online Communities
Julie Paul is a strategic leader with a proven track record of success in online custom and access panel research and global operations management. She has been responsible for conceptualizing, planning, and launching multimillion-dollar revenue centers and expanding market foothold to create industry leaders.
Her early career, post university, began in product management at McIntyre & Dodd Marketing, a direct response marketing company. Julie also held marketing and product management positions within the Credit Union system, working at Westminster Savings and Envision Credit Union. Julie’s contributions spanned comprehensive market research/analysis to full cycle product management, from concept through release.
By 1997, Julie joined Ipsos Reid as a Senior Research Manager, overseeing a ~$1M annual business. This involved working as key point of contact for clients through needs analysis, delivering recommendations, defining research goals and methodology, and overseeing delivery of findings.
Julie joins Toluna as Senior Vice President, Online Communities after leading the vision, planning, and launch of the Interactive Custom Panel Division for Ipsos North America, managing the business through tremendous growth over several years. Julie holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing and Human Resources from McGill University and a College Diploma in Commerce.
Senior Vice President, Enterprise Solutions, NA
Peter Shafer joined Toluna as Senior Vice President, Enterprise Solutions in April 2011. Most recently, Peter served as CEO of KRC Research. In this role he was responsible for KRC’s strategic plan and business operations, specifically focused on new business development, research innovation, talent acquisition and client management. Shafer comes to Toluna with more than 20 years of industry experience having held marketing and sales leadership positions at the Gallup Organization, and Harris Interactive. Peter spent 12 years in various senior public affairs positions with several DC-based organizations. He is the author of two books relating to public affairs measurement and has written numerous articles published in a variety of journals, periodicals and major newspapers. Peter has a BA in Political Science from Washington College and currently serves on the Washington College Alumni Council as head of the Strategic Planning Committee. In addition, he has a Masters in Marketing from the University of Maryland.
Senior Vice President Quality and Innovation, General Manager France
Philippe Guilbert joined Toluna in 2007 as Sr VP in charge of Quality and Innovation. Philippe defines Toluna’s new product development strategy. Before Toluna, he was Scientific Director of several TOP10 French Market Research institutes (BVA, CSA, TN Sofres). He has a diploma in advanced statistics (ENSAE) and economic sciences (Paris I university).
Senior Vice President of Global Supply Acquisition
Sandy is the SVP of Toluna’s Global Supply Acquisition team. The supply group is in charge of any and all aspects of supply, or respondent acquisition, such as Panel, Real Time Sampling and Outside Sample Vendors. Prior to joining Toluna Sandy worked with Cint, Greenfield Online and Socratic Technologies all in executive roles responsible for building each company’s respondent capabilities. Prior to joining the market research industry Sandy was a successful entrepreneur in the affinity marketing sector. Sandy has a degree in communication from Chapman University.
