50% of Brits admit concern over the advent of swine flu

30 April 2009: Online research panel Toluna spoke to 1000 UK residents in the last 24 hours to find out how the nation is really feeling about the much-discussed threat of swine flu. Although there are only five confirmed cases in the UK to date, the topic is at the front of everyone’s minds, especially as the WHO raises its warning level to five.

Of the 1000 respondents questioned, 50% said that they are somewhat or very worried by the advent of swine flu. Only 16% claimed not to be concerned – a telling figure after a comparatively short space of time.

Furthermore, 37% of respondents said that they feel personally threatened by the disease, indicating the extent to which our concern is growing.

The research also asked people what they considered the best way to handle the disease:
A clear majority of 54% said that international coordination was the most effective solution at this stage
37% want to see increased border controls
21% feel that staying at home will help (ie not travelling)
18% say that wearing a flu mask is the best way to keep themselves healthy and prevent the spread of disease
